Funding and Budget
Besides its system-wide mandate, JIUs financing model represents another innovative approach. In accordance with article 20 of the Unit’s Statute, the budget is included in the regular budget of the UN and “the expenditures of the Unit shall be shared by the Participating Organizations as agreed by them”. Accordingly, all organizations participating in the JIU Statute have agreed to finance it on the basis of a cost-sharing agreement.
In accordance with article 20 of the JIU Statute, its budget is included in the regular budget of the United Nations and its expenditures are shared by the participating organizations based on their respective agreement.
For the 2016-2017 biennium, the full budget of the Unit (before recosting) was $14 million. The annual regular budget allocation to the Unit for 2016 was $6.5 million, of which 93 per cent are staff costs.
