UN Secretary-General meets with the Joint Inspection Unit

The JIU Chairperson, Carolina Fernandez Opazo and JIU Executive Secretary, Uren Pillay met with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, 26 February 2025. 

The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the work of the JIU and committed the organization to the implementation of the Unit’s recommendations.

He commended the JIU for its attention to topics that are relevant and timely and made special note of the report on mutual recognition and the report on mental health and wellbeing.  

Inspector Fernandez Opazo emphasized the Unit’s dedication to improving system-wide efficiency and effectiveness.

The Joint Inspection Unit is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system mandated to conduct system-wide evaluations, inspections and investigations. It seeks to ensure the optimum use of available resources by the United Nations system, and to enhance the efficiency of its administrative and financial functioning.
