JIU Executive Secretary Uren Pillay Retires After Years of Dedicated Service
On August 28th, the Inspectors and the staff of the JIU gathered in full to bid a warm and emotional farewell to Executive Secretary Uren Pillay, retiring after 25 years in the United Nations.
After his career in the private sector as an auditor in South Africa, Uren Pillay joined the United Nations in January 2000 as an auditor within the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS). His dedication quickly led him to the role of Chief of Office and Special Assistant to the Under-Secretary-General of OIOS. In 2008, Uren took on the role of Executive Secretary of the Independent Audit Advisory Committee of the United Nations. He later served as Team Lead of the Project Management Office implementing the UN Secretariat ERP Umoja. After these experiences that further deepened his understanding of UN operations he moved to the next, and last, professional chapter at the JIU, which he joined in August 2016 — first as temporary Executive Secretary, officially appointed in June 2017.
As Uren is returning to South Africa for a well-earned retirement, the JIU team takes this moment to express sincere appreciation for his years of dedication. His deep knowledge, steady guidance, and thoughtful support have been a source of strength for the Secretariat and Inspectors alike.
