JIU Supporting Sustainable Practices Across the United Nations System
On 28 March 2026, the United Nations will observe Earth Hour, a global initiative that calls for collective action on climate change and promotes more sustainable practices across institutions and communities worldwide.
The Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) is pleased to join this collective effort and signal its support for climate action across the UN system. As the only external, independent, system-wide oversight body, the JIU contributes to strengthening efficiency in resource use, coordination and sustainable management practices across organizations.
This commitment is reflected in the JIU’s work, including in its Review of mainstreaming environmental sustainability across organizations of the United Nations system (JIU/REP/2020/8).
The review found that “UN organizations have not adequately integrated or prioritized environmental sustainability within their internal management systems, resulting in missed opportunities to reduce their environmental footprint and demonstrate climate leadership.”
Earth Hour is a reminder that sustainability starts with everyday practices and individual responsibility - but must also be supported by collective action and system-wide approaches, governance and accountability. Earth Hour provides a moment to reflect on this shared commitment.
Through its oversight work, the JIU helps identify gaps, promote good practices and support the United Nations system in advancing more sustainable and efficient operations.
