JIU Chair Strengthens Cooperation with ICAO in Montreal, Canada
On 27th and 28th October 2025 in Montreal, Inspector Carolina Fernández Opazo, carried out the first official mission of a Chair of the United Nations Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), with the objective of reinforcing JIU’s commitment to closer collaboration with organizations across the UN system.
Hosted by ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar and Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano, the visit brought together senior officials from ICAO's participating oversight, finance, and administration divisions, as well as members of the Committee on Governance (COG). Discussions focused on strengthening accountability, promoting knowledge-sharing, and improving coordination between the Unit and Management. The mission also provided an opportunity to learn from ICAO’s recent governance and management reforms, which offer valuable insights for broader system-wide improvement. Both instances reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing communication and exchanging experiences to foster efficiency and transparency.
This visit forms part of the JIU’s work plan for achieving its strategic objectives of assisting the legislative organs in meeting their governance responsibilities in respect of their oversight function and to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of secretariats, as well as its outreach action plan, aimed at broadening the public’s knowledge on the work of the Joint Inspection Unit as to build a more coherent and collaborative oversight culture across the UN system.
