The Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) of the United Nations system extends its best wishes for the holiday season and the new year. As 2024 comes to a close, the JIU reflects on a productive year of oversight and improvement efforts across the UN system.
Key Highlights of 2024
- Leadership election: The JIU re-elected Inspector Carolina Fernandez Opazo (Mexico) as Chair and Inspector Jesús Miranda Hita (Spain) as Vice-Chair for 2025.
- Programme of Work: The Unit adopted its 2025 program, which includes six system-wide reviews and a management review of a participating organization.
- Increased recommendation acceptance: The overall acceptance rate of JIU recommendations rose to 74% in 2023, up from 65% in 2017.
The JIU remains committed to its mandate of conducting system-wide evaluations, inspections, and investigations to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the UN system. As the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system, the JIU continues to work towards ensuring optimal use of resources and identifying best practices across the organization.
